ULTRASONIC INSPECTION OF TUBES BY ENCIRCLING PHASED-ARRAY SEARCH UNIT
A new Profile by Framatome

See also article INSPECTION OF TUBE USING ULTRASONIC PHASED ARRAY PROBES

overview

    Applications:
    • High-rate ultrasonic inspection of tubes.
    • Dimension and soundness checks.
    Principle:
    • Encircling phased-arrav ultrasonic search unit.
    • Beam rotated hy electronic scanning system.
    • Mechanical movement of tube- limited to travel in one direction.
    • Focusing and deflection of beam (in radial plane) programmable by signal acquisition electronics.
    • Focusing and mechanical deflection of beam (in axial plane) by mirror system.

MUSTANG acquisition system:

  • Ability to drive search units with up to 128 elements.
  • Real-time digital processing system.
  • Modular system allowing several probes to be driven.
  • Search unit configuration varied by changing mirror.

Performance:
Examples of applications:

  • Checking soundness of 10 mm diameter tubes traveling at 16m/min with a beam rotating at 10 000 rpm
  • Dimension check: acquisition of 170 profiles per second.
