In the field of semifinished products, the thickness measurement is of considerable importance because in addition to receiving information about the product itself, information cen also be obtained about the condition of the production installation, e.g. wear or damage. On the other hand, punctual maintenance avoids waste and long downtimes.
The UMW (universal thickness measurement system) consists of a high-performance 4-channel system with integrated PC. The pulse repetition frequency for each channel ranges up to 5 kHz; probes of 0.2 to 25 MHz can be connected; resolution is 0.01 mm (240 MHz count frequency).
The UMW offers extensive triggering possibilities (pos./neg. flank, maximum value, zero crossing), integrated PC (486/50) with hard disk and TFT colour display enable preprocessing in order to check thickness, eccentricity, ovality of the tube and coupling as well as detection of laminations. The system can be sychronized with the process via universal control inputs. In addition to this it has real-time control outputs and OFFLINE data outputs which enable data transfer to PDA systems.(= production data acquisition).
The UMW is used for wall thickness measurements and geometry measure ments in the rotation testing machine (USIROT) in which tubes, having diameters of up to approximately 180 mm, are tested for longitudinal and transverse flaws.
In another testing machine (OSK), for monitoring flach trimming, the removal of excess upset is monitored by the UMW on the longitudinal scams of ERW tubes.
It is supplied as a table-top instrument and as a 19" unit and con be as easily integrated into an existing machine as into a new machine. By connecting standard peripherals, such as an external VGA monitor, oscilloscope or printer, this system is suitable for universal applications.
