Recent PhDs with experimental ultrasonic backgrounds are invited to send application materials to Prof. Mark Hinders, Applied Science Department, The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA 23187-8795. Active ultrasonic projects are in the areas of nondestructive flaw detection and materials characterization, in situ sensors for process control, and non-invasive medical diagnostics. Existing apparatus include those for Lamb wave contact scanning, ultrasonic immersion scanning, acoustic microscopy, dental probing, cardiac scanning, and endoscopic ultrasonography. NDE facilities are currently located in the new Tercentenary Hall in William and Mary's historic old campus. Additional NDE facilities will be available next year in the 120,000 sq. ft. Applied Research Center building currently under construction at Jefferson Lab. William and Mary is one of the most selective universities in the country, and is known for its focus on undergraduate teaching. The Applied Science Department offers the MA, MS and PhD degrees in Nondestructive Evaluation, as part of an overall focus on materials and materials science. The faculty of the Department includes affiliated faculty from other science departments as well as adjunct faculty from NASA's Langley Research Center and DoE's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, giving a truly multidisciplinary and highly collaborative research environment. Successful candidates would be expected to contribute to a variety of externally funded research projects, including upgrading and maintaining established apparatus and designing and constructing new ones. Opportunities also exist for mentoring undergraduate and graduate student projects as well as some classroom instruction. The College of William and Mary is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. Members of underrepresented groups (including people of color, persons with disabilities, Vietnam veterans and women) are encouraged to apply.
