Highlights of last month's discussion topics (previous)

We browsed the last month's 40 messages, which were really not many. Also most of it was advertising and web page announcements. With the NDTnet Forum we don't want to make any competition, but there we had 80 messages and the question is allowed - Is the NDTnet Forum more attractive then the Newsgroup?
Anyway we could find 8 messages which may be interesting to read.

Review of July '99
Highlights of last month's discussion topics
By Rolf Diederichs

After only 40 messages during June, 100 messages were posted during July. Unfortunately banal, repetitious advertising was a big part of it. (e.g. Tracor/Spectrace XRF5000E X-ray Florescence Spectrometer $8900.

This  started a debate about appropriate posts. Over the last 3 years, I remember seeing this same argument a number of times. Here Jay L. Fisher, from SwRI, tries to find a consensus. 1999/07/19.

In my opinion the newsgroup is bothered more by the NDT  trade companies than from real spam. In Site for Commercial Advertisement William E. Blum recommended  the use of NDTnet's Classified Ads Board.

Anyway, we did have some good topics - they're listed in the right hand frame. Some of the most interesting topics are listed below with a link to the full message. Remember, to see all replies, you cannot rely on the "View Thread" link at the Deja Database. You'll need to browse the subject line for the entire month to find all related replies. Also there are posts from job seekers and employers. NDT manufacturers will find some posts which seem to be serious inquiries.

Inspection of Parts in Inconel 1999/07/31]. Aerospace parts in AMS5662E Inconel 718 and 625, which contain 55% and 61% nickel respectively. The material will be heat treated/precipitation hardened to achieve high strength properties. Are there any problems for MPI? Is PT better?

TOFD [1999/07/30]. Please reply to me if you have had any dealings with TOFD either good or bad.

NDT system and technology for rolls used in steel mills [1999/07/21]. A very precise inquiry.

Ultrasonic Inspection of Propellers [1999/07/20].

X-ray CT system [07/14/99]. Does anyone know of manufacturer producing X-ray CT system?

XY scanner needed [1999/07/13].

NDT 07/12/99]. Actually looked for pulsed eddy current.

Job Opening: NDE Engineer [07/12/99]. From NTIAC.

Cost Comparison: Filmless vs Film Radiography [1999/07/08]. From NTIAC

bond inspection [1999/07/06]. Need help in inspecting the bond condition of a composite material....

internal inspection [1999/07/02]. Wall loss from the inside, piping ranging in size from 1" to 10".

Conference Announcement [1999/07/01]. Call for papers for the NDE of Aging Aircraft ...

Highlights of last month's discussion topics.
By Rolf Diederichs

Before we start our review I would like to mention some new features of the Deja Newsgroup Database which you may like to check out. But take care: There is always a mix-up of the thread of messages, this may happen since some of the posts are forwarded by the SWRI mailing list. That means you cannot rely on "View Thread" or "Track Thread" functions. You need to browse the subject line to find the corresponding topic posted as "Re: Subject" at another date and perhaps another thread starts again.

The newsgroup had 64 messages. As usual I will try to cover the main topics here in this review, also some major keywords are listed in the right hand frame. You can browse topics of your choice by clicking the "Show all May Posts" button on this page.

The message "GPR FOR BRIDGE ASSESSMENT" 1999/05/14 shows us to clear not to get to much use of abbreviations like GRP (Ground Penetrating Radar); a reader asked "What's GPR?". I hope that UT is acceptable.

For the question "Plating Thickness Question" 1999/05/20 you can find a detailed answer by Tom Nelligan from Panametrics Inc. Not only in our Forum is Tom very active in helping to answer questions. But not every question is followed up: "3d elastic constants" 1999/05/21 or "UT/Thermography of duplex ??" 1999/05/25. Even the message "8 Channel multiplexer" 1999/05/22 received no reply. Maybe it would be better to write "Need a 8 Channel multiplexer to bring up some vendors on the plan.

"matest 99"1999/05/21. Due to the activities of NATO forces against Yugoslavia the MATEST’99 Symposium - Advanced NDT techniques, has changed its venue to the Dubrovnik region, which is safer.

"Wall Thickness Measurement with Pulse Thermography" 1999/05/26. We invited Volker Carl to write about his newly developed method on NDTnet.

"2D & 3D Tomography" 1999/05/27 . This message announced a Web Site of Gamma Ray Computerized Tomography for 2D and 3D NDT inspection. The site has some nice images (including animation) at http://www.icpe.ro/lab/comp-ndt/ We added this server to our Virtual Library (NDTnet Internet crawler).

Highlights of last month's discussion topics.
By Rolf Diederichs

I browsed the last month's about 80 messages have been posted in April, however, a lot of spams and blatant advertising was a high part of it. I will try to cover the main topics here (in my opinion), in this review, as well some major keywords are listed in the right hand frame. You can brows topics of your choice by clicking the "Show all April Posts" button on this page.

"Non-Destructive evaluation for Resistance Welding"1999/04/08 A Site was introduced which presented a work on the elimination of destructive testing in resistance welding. This project was implemented at the manufacturers facility, and now saves the company over $100,000 annually.

"Some NDE / physics questions" 1999/04/12. Property in the study of x-ray radiography analagous to acoustic impedance and / or reflection coefficient in ultrasonics? Has anyone used Goebbels two-frequencies ultrasonic back scattering method? This massage from a member of a NASA research center received a long thread.

"Ultrasonic Testing " 1999/04/14. How to inspect thick sections of material (up to 26 inches) in an immersion tank with ASTM style reference blocks that only goes up to a #3 FBH at 6 inches (this set is the standard 19 block set). This message received some answeres.

"Gamma Exposure Calculation Needed " 1999/04/28. One needs a equation for working out Gamma exposures? By error a discussion was continued at the NDTnet Forum. For instance, Uli Mletzko suggested that NDT beginners should not ask for the programs but should go into the qualification system! 1999/05/03

"Determining Bond strength on 1" thick rubber covered rolls" 1999/03/04. Is there a reliable NDE method that can Quantitate the attachment of 1" thick rubber attached to steel rolls? This message received a long time no answer. Was no company available which could offer a test? Anyway, finnaly I posted my opinion that with ultrasonic a measurement of the bonding condition should be possible. 1999/03/23. That led to further discussions, so far: 1999/03/23 and 1999/03/24. We continued the discussion at the NDTnet Forum - Rolf D. 1999/03/24/

"Vision Testing of NDT Personnel" 1999/03/09. The topic dealt with operators ability to distinguish between colours and discussed also the Ishihara test. This message received opinions as follows: 1999/03/10, 1999/03/10 and 1999/03/10

A short message "NDT lumber tester avail . Acoustical pulse delay type." 1999/03/15 showed how simple and direct some use the e-mail communication. But this was such extremly short, so that one asked "Can you please expand on the subject of your message?"

One posted a questions about "Uncertainty evaluation in NDT". 1999/03/19 . Robert (Rocky) A. Day posted an extensive reply 1999/03/19

"Detection of Stress Corrosion Cracking"[X]. He wrote "I am looking for a technique to detect stress corrosion cracks in thin walled components (0.2mm) I need to detect these from the non defect surface breaking side." This message received some replies each stated its favorit NDT method like: "Eddy current should be the method of choice. Easy task I'd say" [X], "Electronic phase stepping speckle interferometry" [X], Thermography Technique [X], and another one recommended the eddy current method along with hints and formula for EDM notches [X].

Highlights of last month's discussion topics

Last month's  88 (65)  newsgroup messages indicated an increase in usage, and  our  NDT.net Forum received a very busy  75 messages during January - The New Year starts with time for discussions  or for gathering information!
As usual you can use  the "Show all January Posts" button on this page to browse topics of your choice. In this review, as well as in the selection of topics in the right hand frame, I will try to cover the  most interesting topics, (in my opinion).

In the last review I  pointed out that the NDT Mailing List wasn't forwarding all Newsgroup posts correctly . Most of the people assumed that all the posts were reaching them via the list server. The List owner  (SwRI) hopes that they can get this gateway working smoothly again soon [Ref]. It is possible to  access the Newsgroup directly, but it could be easier. If it doesn't get fixed soon we will all need to start looking at the newsgroup itself.

Eddy Current Testing was obviously the topic of the month, with 12 messages , however, most posts like 'looking for vendors topics' received a lot of replies. Only the post  RFEC describing an inspection problem and asking for technical advice is still waiting for an answer - Who can help?

The message Re: Seeking vendors for leak detection in underground pipes listed search results on Infrared thermography of the SPIE Database. That was  a good pointer for those who did not know about the SPIE Web Site.

Highlights of last month's discussion topics
previous months

Last month's 65 newsgroup messages during the holiday season broke no traffic records, nevertheless a few issues were interesting.

First Newsgroup mailing list subscribers may have noticed some technical difficulties recently. The owner (SwRI) tried to fix it and checked it with the test message "Mailing List Test Please Ignore" 1998/12/03. That message made it, but most of them are still not getting through. We hope that (SwRI) can resolve this problem soon, in the meantime, over 300 subscribers must use other options, none of which offer the same convenience and automation of the mailing list.

Non-destructive testing Non-destructive testing 1998/12/02, with this message a Russian Institute gathered information about technological performances of non-destructive testing tools for inspections of plants of petroleum and gas branches (oil pipeline or main gas pipeline with a diameter 370-1440 mm, steel tanks etc.) - prices were requested!

One message pointed to a Web Site of France NDT resources (in French). Although the site is neither comprehensive nor available in any language other than French, it is still a good start to the process of building awareness of French NDT on the Internet.

Problem with ultrasonic wall thickness gauging of wax injected around a ceramic 1998/12/05, so far, no one has offered this poster any solutions. NDT in process monitoring is indeed a challenge, and we hear a lot of discussion of this topic.
