NDT NewsWeb Archive '97

December'97 (Review of Nov '97)
Christmas is coming soon! Only a few people can still obtain time to post 55 messages. Also on NDTnet we had a 20% decrise of usage. The newsgroup didn't discussed in depth technical subjects last month, instead the type of messages were strong business related, fortunately less pure advertising. Some introductions of test problems along with the commercial solution or request for equipment were posted.

    Here are some Topics

    • NDT, new pages on WWW

"David Mackintosh" : .....software that displays the results of an eddy current heat-exchanger examination as a colour-coded tubesheet map.
    • Inspection of thin wall stainless steel circumferential butt welds
Bill Cook : We have a client that has several thousand 1.5 mm to 4.5 mm ss pipe butt welds. The welding process is TIG. What system other than X-ray is suitable for these welds?

After the summer break the newsgroup usage increased during September . But a level of 99 posts is still not much. That interest in the newsgroup exist, that is shown by 181 subscriptions for the SWRI newsgroup mailing list (plus 9).

    Here are some Topics

    • Ultrasonic Standard - (2 answers)
......making a UT notch standard in HF1 steel.
      That topic received some answeres

    • UT of Piping/Pipeline Girth Welds (2 answers)
Does anyone have an opinion as to the minimum OD and wall thickness of pipe for which shear wave UT of girth (butt) welds is practially possible and meaningful? ...

Attenuation of sound waves (3 answers)
What properties of metal have the most influence on the attenuation of sound? Is it acoustic impedance, or hardness, or tensile strength, or something else? I need to identify the best metal for a lond ultrasonic delay line that will work at temperature up to 1000 C. It also must be corrosion resistant. So far in my experiments tungsten demonstrated the best sound transmission properties but it becomes brittle over time.
Philippe Nasch (pnasch@iissun4.unil.ch) posted with his answer a list of 20 references!

After only 118 messages in July we were down to about 70 messages in August! - One poster asked: "Is this a dead newsgroup???" A provocative reply was posted "Is NDT Dead?..If so why? " But let's hope that this temporary lack of interest in NDT is only due to summer vacations!

There has been great interest in the SWRI newsgroup mailing list with subscriptions up to 172 from only 135 in May. Obviously one factor is the one click subscription process on NewsWeb. There were four job-seekers and three of them used the NDT News Web form on this page. With more than 150 visits each month NDT NewsWeb is well read by our readership.

As usual spam (making $$, sex and so forth) were posted, even one NDT company still trying to get hits for their Homepage. But let's look at some of the more relevant messages.

    Meet your colleague!
New this month - NDT newsgroup active poster list.
The list should help you to know more about your colleagues. To help you get started, we've added some extended profile information from the Dejanews Database to each email. We invite all users to use the form at the end of the list to add more personal information to the provided fields, e.g., Institution, Homepage. You can add your Homepage URL but we will add only educational, non-profit or personal Homepage links. Also you should be a real user, that means your name should be already on the list as an active frequent user. If you don't want your information included on the list, or if corrections are needed, just give us an email and we will change or delete the information. Note: This figures do not represent the total number of NDT newsgroup users. Of course, we can't provide any information on those individuals who read the messages, but do not post. Are there really 1000 users total?

In conjunction with the public NDT user newsgroup list we have provided also a more detailed list of Members of the NDT Newsgroup Mailing List. We expected that most of these people would be more active; we were surprised not to see more posts from them to the Newsgroup.

    Summer time on the newsgroup?
In June we had only 142 messages ( down from 204 in May) and about 15% of those were nonsense or advertising. We don't include those 'off-topic' messages here. Of course there was still some useful information like conference announcements. Here are some examples of useful messages.

    Introduction
The newsgroup "sci.techniques.testing.nondestructive" is dedicated to the exchange of information and discussion of issues relating to nondestructive testing of materials and structures.
In February of 1995, Dr. Jones began the process of creating a Usenet newsgroup for nondestructive testing. In July of 1995, the sci.techniques.testing.nondestructive newsgroup was created, along with sci.techniques.testing.misc.
More details can be found in the newsgroup charter.

The newsgroup is gatewayed to the Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) mailing list. The NDE mailing list provides a way for those who cannot receive the Usenet newsgroup to join in the discussion.
