Resonance inspection - the answer to new industrial demands with regard to quality assurance
The method introduced here is a resonance inspection method using mono-frequent pulses. The classical resonance inspection determines the vibration behaviour of a test object after a impact excitation via a Fourier analysis of the received signals. This is of disadvantage because computing time is consumed for the signal transformation, because a very broadband spectrum is excited which is mostly not required for assessing the test object at all, and because ambient noise often interferes with the signal evaluation. The here introduced resonance test system can do without the Fourier analysis. Animation =>

Resonant Inspection a "new" NDT technique
It is a whole-body inspection that is particularly suited to inspecting smaller mass-produced hard components, and one test will inspect the complete component without radiation, the need for scanning, immersion in liquids, chemicals, abrasives or other consumables. The Author's company offers a rapid response testing service using RI to manufacturing industries.

Ceramic Automotive Valves - Chances and Limitations of Nondestructive Testing [D]
Automotive valves made out of silicon nitride were investigated by various nondestructive testing techniques. Fluorescent dye penetrant testing, High frequency ultrasound (80 MHz), Leaky Rayleigh waves, Digital radiography was used , X-ray computed tomography and Resonant testing. The latter is a very rapid testing technique, but probably not able to detect very small single defects.

Probabilistic assessment of failure risk in load-bearing components
The paper introduces a probabilistic rationale with the associated software for modelling the uncertainties interaction arising from NDE including human factor and on the other hand, by the statistical variation of materials strength characteristics and external loading intensity.

A novel Technique for advanced Ultrasonic Testing of Concrete by using Signal Conditioning Methods and Scanning Laser Vibrometer
This paper deals with an innovative technique, which improves the pulse echo testing of concrete. A laser doppler interferometer, equipped with a random speckle modulator, is used as detector of the ultrasound. The advantage of the suggested technique is demonstrated by practical measurements. The improvement compared to standard laser interferometric measurements will increase the feasibility of laser interferometric detection for non-destructive testing in civil engineering.

Review of the DGZfP annual NDT Conference May '97 in Dresden - 1. Introduction
Rolf Diederichs visited the Conference and the Tabletop Exhibtion May '97 in Dresden. The organizers of the annual conference, DGZfP, the two Polish NDT societies (PTBN and SIMP) and the Czech Society for Nondestructive Testing, CNDT, were pleased with the proceedings - more than 600 participants, about 60 lectures and 80 posters!

NDT-CE '97 Liverpool Report [D]
The 4th International Conference NDT-CE was held at Liverpool from 8th to 11th of April 1997. The Conference was organised by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing and co-sponsored by the University of Liverpool, the DGZfP, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Highways and Transportation, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Concrete Society.

New German guidelines to wall thickness measurement - will be available in English
The German Society for Non-Destructive Testing (DGZfP) has now published 'Guidelines for Thickness Measurement with Ultrasound' which introduces the reader to the subject with a series of different techniques and examples of applications. The 137-page book contains a large number of illustrations and extensive explanations.
AT&T Bell Labs scientists create "T-Rays" to see inside objects
"T-Ray" imaging has potential applications in a wide range of fields, including package inspection, manufacturing process control, environmental monitoring, and non-destructive materials evaluation. This technology is still in the R&D stage and not yet a product. AT&T Bell Laboratories is the research and development arm of AT&T, the global communications and computer company.
