| This Month's Introduction |
|
This month we are proud to offer all 500 ECNDT
'98 Abstracts!
Since the ECNDT had only camera ready papers available we had to do a lot of
scanning. These abstracts included illustrations, so we had to process more than 150 images.
Because of all that, we could not provide our usual amount of full-text
articles in this issue. But we have begun some Visual Testing articles with
the help of our new sponsor V.I.T..
This is a good example of how NDT.net expands to include all NDT methods!
Next month we will update many full-text papers from the ECNDT'98 Proceedings, your bookmark for state-of-the-art in NDT. We hope that other NDT societies will notice the benefit of Internet publishing. We invite them to send us their conference papers for the NDT Database; we'll provide all necessary formatting at no charge. Sites which cannot afford this kind work on their own homepage (like ASNT) may contact us; we can provide a Database link between their own Homepages and NDTnet. A search through one Database can be more effective than a regular Internet search. We all know how difficult it is to get useful search results from the standard Internet search engines. A good example is the Preview of Abstracts of the International Conference on Advanced Materials which was kindly submited by X.E. Gros. Last but not least we are pleased to present the Survey on Ultrasonic Flaw Detectors characterizations. These results are based on about 50 responses. |

| Remote Handling and Robotic Inspections
of Palo Verde Reactor Vessel Internals
| Remote visual examinations and handling evolutions in high radiation field environments have required the use of radiation tolerant video systems. Miniaturization and technological improvements in underwater capacity CCD based camera systems have provided a small envelope, light weight, easily handled alternative to radiation tolerant tube type systems. Utilization of the VIT Ca-Zoom cameras and ROVVER 4.0 crawler enabled expedient successful completion of UGS guide tube inspections and core barrel assembly handling at Palo Verde. William Ryder, Arizona Public Service Company, Tonopah, AZ, USA

| Remote Visual Testing (Rvt) For Internal Pressure Vessel Inspection
| Remote visual testing (RVT) of large surface areas ( > 1 sq. meter) associated with vessel inspection requires a unique hardware approach compared to that of commercially-available borescopes, fiberscopes and videoborescopes. The 5.5" dia. pan, tilt, light, color, zoom video inspection camera system has been successfully used to inspect several hundred vessels to date. The video images have been digitized and transmitted over the INTERNET to corporate engineering headquarters for analysis, archiving and trending. Bruce A. Pellegrino, Visual Inspection Technologies, Inc., NJ, USA
VT
| VT Examination of BWR Re-Circulation Pump Internals.
FORCE Institute was asked to design and build a manipulator for a complete visual examination for cracks in the inner surface of the above mentioned pumps. Mounting of the manipulator on the pump flange should be designed to minimise the total dose taken by the operators of the equipment. For the same reason the number of changes of the camera set-up should be minimised. J. Larsen, L. Vesth, L. Jeppesen - FORCE Inst., Denmark.

| Report and Opinions: Needle or Square?
| The article deals with the differences in pulser design in detail which could be a knowledge gap for ultrasonic practicians. In addition to a technical understanding of the various methods of excidation, we will also discuss possible consequences for the practical field, i.e. special applications. An article from the new Echo 37 produced Krautkramer

An interesting result based on about 50 responses. Almost nobody needs a small and lightweight instrument! Sound path measurement is very often required as an integrated feature.
