I did this in the 80s for C-steel pipe with a surrounding magnetizing coil, and some pick-up coils, It is written up in an issue of "Insight" (or whatever it was called before!), probably 1996. The same method is used for the cross-sectional areas of used drill pipe, and oilfield tubing as it is being pulled from a well.
