ASTM A388 vs. MIL-STD-2154 UT of Forgings

Posted by: Tom Folk , E-mail: Address, on June 13, 2008 at 21:34 :

I have received a request for the use of ASTM A388 in place of MIL-STD-2154 for angle beam UT inspection of forging material.

The current requirement is Class A acceptance criteria as per Table VI of 2154. The requested deviation is "calibration as per A388." it is assumed that the associated acceptance criteria is to be applied.

The reasoning is that this will provide a more defined approach for angle beam inspection in areas where 2154 is not defined.

Does anyone have some insight into the overlap of these two approaches and whether this type of request should be considered.
