Dear Gary,
In response to your question, one of the most interesting techniques, which claims to be sensitive to 'far-side' flaws in composite honeycomb structures is laser shearography. Further information can be found on this technique from LTI, 1055 West Germantown Park, Norristown PA 19403, Tel 610 631 5043.
More generally, as a member company of TWI, Boeing is able to put questions such as yours directly to our staff in Cambridge, UK.
As you may know, TWI is an independent R&D organisation concerned with all aspects of joining technology. The service we provide to our members covers all of the various aspects of joining from process selection, joint design, proof of concept (fracture, fatigue, impact testing etc) to NDE.
As part of your annual membership fee, a certain amount of funding exists which can be used to answer questions like yours, either directly through discussion with our technical experts or through a
computerised literature search facility we have on-site, which is dedicated to joining.
