Have you ever heard from the companies UltraFast and Ultracoat?
They have a nice "Smartsensor" solution for your Problem I guess. We use their system for Full-Scale-Fatigue-Tests of aircrafts to monitor stress in bolts within the running time of the test.
The system uses bolts, which will be coated with a piezo-sensor-film which can be read out with portable electronic, determining the stress with a sophisticated algorithm.

This is only an idea; I am not familiar with your applications so it could be no recommendation....
