Attempts to relate ultrasonic pulse velocity to conrete compression strength extend over more than three decades. Since there is no single physical relationship articles and books have been filled with effects of influencing factors.
There are so many influencing factors that common opinion is now to use such relationships only in very controlled environments as in the fabrication of precast concrete elements.
Descriptions of measurement and correlation methods are contained in European standards prEN 13791 (preliminary) in conjunction with prEN 13296 (preliminary, will be renamed to EN 12504-04), for example.
