Code Case 2235 examination volume

Code Case 2235 paragraph (a) requires that for t<= 8 inch the examination include the volume of the weld plus the lesser of 1 inch or t on each side of the weld.

In most cases this would require additional TOFD scans with the probe pair offset (see sketch), which in turn might require the weld cap to be ground flat. In other words, it is very difficult to cover the required volume using TOFD alone.

In practice, I believe many NDT examiners are carrying out TOFD without worrying about covering the edges of the examination volume. Can anyone confirm this? Or are there examiners who make the extra effort to cover the entire zone?

Supplemental UT is used to cover the TOFD dead zones. Perhaps supplemental UT should also be used to cover the entire width of the examination volume, thus removing the necessity of grinding the weld cap flat for TOFD.

Thanks,
David Mackintosh
