Precleaning of aluminum products prior to FPI

I am looking for some general "industry rules" regarding the precleaning of aluminum (2025) products prior to FPI. If FPI is performed after such metal working process as; milling, turning, drilling, etc, should metal smearing be a major concern? If so, to what extent, and what type of surface treatment should preclude an FPI?
Keeping in mind that these parts are machined to final tolerances which can be as close as +/- .0005". Just looking for some advice from those that have experienced this "Catch 22".
