If you are required to examine a non-magnetic weld where the reinforcement has been machined or ground away, and you are not sure of exactly where the weld is, the use of an AC yoke & red powder will usually reveal the toe(s) of the weld rather easily. We use this technique, based on the permiability differences between the base metal and the filler metal, to mark the weld for radiography.
