: Another great topic.
: Aside from the more obvious differences in gender traits, the female side has some distinct advantages over us guys in some of the NDT tasks that we perform.
: I spent several years managing QA and NDT in China for a large company. In the radiography group, almost all of the film readers were female. I soon learned that close attention to fine detail made them better suited for this task than most guys.
: Better hand-eye co-ordination also gives females the edge in manual UT scanning for example.
: In my long (42 years) NDT career I personally have hired, managed and know many female technicians. Just like guys, they have strengths and weaknesses. But on the whole, there is no reason why they cannot make a significant contribution to our industry.
: : All and all, it's the same old thing = Prejudice. I guess it's a little more prevalent against women, because of the label we have put on women and more so in certain cultures. Personally, I've worked with many women and my attitude towards them is that they be like one of the boys. I don't mean by this wiping your nose on your sleeve and spitting, but to do the same work as we do. I don't know about other countries, but in Canada they have equal pay, so they should do equal work. On the other hand, I've also worked with some guys who were just starting in the trade yet they consider thickness reading to be beneat them. Myself, I don't care if they are man or woman as long as the job get done and they carry their load.

: : : I posted a response but apparently it got lost somewhere in cyberspace.
: : : I would say there is no problem for women in NDT. I would however caution a pregnant lady from RT exposure related activities. Film developing and interpretations are fine.
: : : In general, follow all the safety standards and you would be fine.
: : : Best wishes.

We are having an interesting discussion. All radiation issues relate to "safety first" that is the trademark of MISTRAS Services and it's predecessor CONAM Inspection. Safety does not distinguish on gender, but it is an absolute necessaty in NDT! We are living in a world that must be free of prejudisisms and in my opinion NDT leads in this area. With the fear of ommission I can mention to you that Dr. Vicky Panhuise followed me as President of ASNT and we now have a woman President of ASNT. For years the ICNDT had several strong members who were also woman. May I also mention Prof. Vjera Krstelj from Croatia who is also a founding member of NDT ACADEMIA or our extremely competent General Secretary Dr. Irena Pushkina that we can not function without her. Personally I am very proud of my daughter Athanasia Tia who is the Managing Director of ENVIROCOUSICS ABEE, a very succesfull NDT Services and Research Company in Greece, of Dr. Didem Ozevin who is a Pricipal Researcher in our company and just obtained a prestigious NIST $1MM Research contract leading a lot of men and some of them Professors, or the head of our IR research Dr. Obdulia Ley. Keep in-mind that the VP Of Marketing and sales of OLYMPUS is a very competent NDT woman, so is the Head of GE-NDT sales in Europe or two of my most favored Acoustic Emission Professors are woman from UK and Belgium and so on......I have the fear I will forget some including the General Secretary of the Chinese Society of NDT etc. My apologies if I forgot someone and can only say as a father of 3-daughters and 2-grand daughters I will do my outmost to protect any employee from stupid old style prejudicisms morally and most importantly legally, and I know as a leader in ASNT and ICNDT worldwide so will do all my colleagues. So I would like to see more "new blood" in NDT since the NDT Technicians shortage continues worldwide, as we assessed it in the last ICNDT meeting. Men and women need to apply and be trained ASAP. I am sure that the NDT companies I know worldwide do not pay attention to gender and if one does we all would like to know since they will become the Pariahs of our industry. Our good friend Rolf has also given us this great page to report any stupid actions and illegalities from individuals that have no morals or understand they now live in the 21st Century. Sorry for the long diatribe, but needs to be said! All the best for 2009 to all and I am sure that this financial tsunami worldwide will pass. Thank God that we are in NDT that still needs Researchers,Engineers, and practioners/technicians. Sotirios
