SIDS monitor

I am interested in identifying transducer technology
that could be used to create a "bedding" SIDS
(Sudden Infant Death Syndrom) monitor.

For example, one researcher has had some success with
a water-filled pad connected to a hydrophone.
An infant is placed on the pad, and breathing and
heartbeat sounds are acoustically coupled into the
water in the pad. The hydrophone picks up these
sounds.

I'm wondering if a similar measurement system could
be created without water, say, using PVDF films.
For example, could a "bubble pack" array made of
PVDF be instrumented with electrodes that would
act similar to a water-filed pad w/ hydrophone.
