Technique for embedding fiber optics in metallic structures for smart material applications
Abstract »In this paper a technique to embed fiber optic sensors (FOS) to metallic structures is presented and validated opening possibilities to smart metallic structures. The technique is based in widely adopted and low cost TIG welding. A detailed procedure for scaling up is presented in which, Ni and Cu coated fiber optics at first, and Ni coated FBG sensors at last are embedded in Tin coated forged steel ST-52 with Tin alloy wire. Tensile and temperature tests show stable measurements with 1.3pm/µm and 24pm/ºC sensibility in the embedded sensor in a metallic specimen for strain ranges from 0 to 550µm and temperature ranges from 50 to 200ºC.

Biography: I studied Telecommunication Engineering in the Public University of Navarre and started my PhD in fiber optic sensors right after finishing my Masters. My research was focused in developing distributed sensors, and the experience I got from research stays in Italy and Portugal had a big impact in focusing my approach to my job. I realized that understanding the background of the sensing technology itself is as important as their application. In other words, understanding the application of the sensors helps to develop a better sensing technology. Therefore, after several years developing Fiber Optic sensors I became interested in one of their main applications: Civil Engineering. I obtained a Fulbright scholarship to study a Master in this field and complete my education in the United States.
After the completion of the Fulbright scholarship and Master degree I defended my PhD thesis dissertation in Fiber Optic Distributed Sensors in the UPNA.
Following my graduation, I started working in the Aimen technology center as a Senior PhD researcher, where I contribute actively to research and development of sensing technologies and Structural Health Monitoring. linkedin
