Success Stories of Diverse Real-Life Fiber Optic Sensing SHM Applications
Abstract »Over the past decade, optical fiber sensors have achieved matured development and increased reliability which have led to a greater acceptance and more widespread use in a variety of different structural health monitoring (SHM) applications across different fields. Yet, the common perception is that this technology remains a novelty with very limited real-life uses and commercial adoption. This talk will try to dispel this perception through several case studies of real-life commercial projects in civil, energy, aerospace, defense transportation and other segments; and show how pervasive fiberoptic-based sensing has become in the SHM field, as well as its technical achievements and commercial impact.
Biography: Alexis Mendez received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Brown University, USA in 1992. He is president of MCH Engineering LLC and Director at Micron Optics Inc. He has written over 65 technical publications, taught multiple short courses on fiber sensing, holds 5 US patents and is recipient of an R&D100 award. Dr. Mendez is a Fellow of SPIE, Committee member of ISHMII, and was past Chairman of the 2006 International Optical Fiber Sensors Conference (OFS-18). He is co-editor of the “Specialty Optical Fibers Handbook” and “Fiber Optical Sensors Book—Fundamentals & Applications, 4th Ed.”
