Structural Health Monitoring, The Beginning and the End
Abstract »The hallmark of structural health monitoring is change -- changes in loading, changes in the material state, changes in structural performance. The way in which SHM technology can be implemented to realize more reliable and cost effective systems is also changing as we develop a better understanding of how to go from data to decisions. This talk begins by discussing a new research paradigm that combines SHM sensor analytics with process control to monitor and manipulate the material state in the manufacturing of advanced composites. By incorporating white light emitting nanocrystals for monitoring the degree of cure in composite materials as a function of the emission spectrum, the manufacturing process could be optimized for speed and quality despite variations in moisture etc. The talk ends by demonstrating how these same built-in sensors could be used in operation to characterize the early-stage degradation of polymeric composite materials for a range of applications from wind energy to automotive systems.
