Ultrasonic Longitudinal and Transverse Wave Modes

I am curious to know how exactly longitudinal ultrasonic waves mode convert into transverse waves. I understand the fact that transverse waves have about half the velocity of longitudinal waves because of the extra distance traveled in the transverse wave. But, what happens to the material’s molecules, grain structure, or atoms, when a longitudinal wave reflects off of a boundary and is then transformed into a transverse wave? Any information about this subject would help greatly. Thank You
