Volumetrically sizing using TOFD

Hello,

I am an MSc student from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen
(Scotland). For my project I need to find a TOFD system which
could be able to size volumetrically defects in welds.
I would really appreciate if someone could give me some informations
about it (theory, internet links, bibliography, etc).

We are working now on the system that is more than only TOFD-system.
It can see the whole acoustical hologram of the object (and is based on the similiar idea as our fingerprint recognition camera).

The first such system should be ready in May and will be used for visualisation of internal structure of such objects as Fruits, fingers and other biological objects).
It would be possible to make a version of this device, that can visualize welds (show the internal structure of the weld).

Hi Joseph

Take a look at FORCE Institute's P-scan System 4...
It can handle all conventional UT modes, including TOFD,
and can generate Top, Side and End views of the test
piece, even in its basic off-the-shelf configuration.

With additional software it can also generate active
3-D simulations.

We'll be at Materials Testing 2000 next week (May 9th
to 11th) on Stand D1 at the NEC, Birmingham, UK. We'll
have a P-scan System 4 (in its standard configuration)
at the Stand. Come along if you can for a chat, or if you can't then

If your task is to do volumetric sizing, rather than specifically the use of TOFD in sizing, then Diagnostic Sonar's Flaw Imager system, could be of interest.

TOFD uses a divergent beam to cover the region & this is thenn mechanically swept through the volume of interest. The Flaw Imager uses linear arrays to achieve the same regional coverage, but since the beams are swept, they retain the same signal to noise ratio of the conventional single element systems.

The laptop-based instrument produces real-time B-scans (as used by medical imagers) and so can be used for interactive searching. The array is fitted into a simple mechanical position sensing system for acquiring the volumetric data you require.
