Ultrasound in ceramic pipes

I am trying to monitor small diameter old ceramic sewer pipes
from the inside using ultrasound,to look for cracks in the pipes
and voids around the pipes that could lead to collapse.
I have been told by ultrasound experts whose advice I have sought
that this is impossible and that others have tried and failed.

I can't find any papers describing attempts--maybe because
of the lack of success.
Can anybody help with references please?

It might be possible to find flaws in the wall region of the pipes, using immersion technique from inside the pipes.

: and voids around the pipes

There will be a very large sound impedance mismatch between the ceramic material of the pipes and the surrounding ground (soil or sand or gravel or rocks). So almost no sound will pass from the ceramic wall to the surrounding ground. To find voids outside the pipe therefore should not be possible.

As another posted, it is unlikely that ultrasound will provide the results you need.
Another possibility is MIR (Ground Penetrating Radar) There is perhaps a GPR Head that could be passed along your pipes to detect voids.
The crack detection may not be so easy. Can you apply a slight depression to the pipe and listen for the ultrasonics generated by incoming air?
