cold insulation inspection

I am looking for the best method to inspect ice formation under Ammonia tanks ( double wall). the insulation is PUF with aluminum cladding ( the insulation is approx. 4" )

We been experminating with thermography but we can not establish a solid fact if ice is there or not

Can you send me a mare detailled description of your system. (configuration, equipements ...)

Re: cold insulation inspection
You may not be able to be definitive about ice build up using Thermography. Breakdowns in insulation which you could then extrapolate as being a source of icing should be detectable. Be careful that outer aluminium cladding is not heating up and masking differences. We often used to do the Thermography just after the sun went down.

Other possible approach is something like Neutron Backscatter - but access will be the problem you will probably have to work off cherry pickers.

Best methodology may be to build a mock up of the arrangement and test your technique qith Thermography. Introduce ice and see how fine your settings have to be to maintain discriminations.

FMC/TFM

Next generation for Phased Array UT is here now with FMC/TFM! Have higher resolution imaging, impr
...
oved signal to noise ratio, characterize, size and analyze defects better with access to several wave mode views and save raw FMC data for higher quality analysis.  Some of the benefits are:
  • Beautiful Image! Easier to understand what you're looking at
  • Completely focused in entire image or volume
  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
  • See image from different wave modes from one FMC inspection
  • FMC data can be reprocessed/analyzed without going back to the field
