Detection of vertical defects

Friends,

Can we detect a vertical defect which is not surface breaking in a tube using eddy current ?

It all depends on the thickness of the part and the frequency you are using.

Greetings,

It also depends on the material, particularly whether it is ferritic or not.

Cheers,

Frank

In theory, it is possible and in practice, the ideal way of testing would be to prepare id and od notches of less width and good depth using EDM techniques and try to detect the OD notches from the ID side and ID notches from the OD side. That way, you are trying to detect discontinuities that are not surface breaking!

You may need to experiment with frequency and coil dimensions etc. We used to make our own coils (I am referring to the place where I was employed as QC Manager in charge of many things including NDT Development).
