Ground penetrating radar

Hello NDT brothers.

One of my customers needs to examine a 3 meters underground floor to explore for energized AC cables. Which is the deeper thickness the RADAR systems can evaluate?, can some specialist give me some guidelines, deeply appreciated???

If the concrete or soil is dry, you can reach even more than 3 metres depth using, for instance, a 500 MHz antenna. In case there is some thick reinforcement in the concrete over your target you may have a very high scattering of the signal, that may mask the reflections of your actual targets. Furthermore the larger is the diameter of the cables you want to inspect, the more clear and reliable will be the reflected signal. If the cables you are going to inspect are large diameter cables (i.e. high-voltage underground cables) you have some possibilities of detecting them with GPR, otherwise, if they are relatively small diameter cables you have really few chances to detect them at 3 m depth.

Thank you very much MAssimo !!!!

I have some other questions. Which could be the minimum cable diameter that could be detected. ???

Do you know any branch of reconized equipments?

Thanks

If the material above the cables is very uniform, upon my experience at 3 mtres depth using a 400 or 500 MHz antenna, you could be able to detect 10 cm diametre high voltage cables. For smaller diametres it is very unlikely, unless there is more then one cable and the cables are quite close so that they form a sort o beam (but generally HV cables are kept quite apart one to the other in order to allow heat dispersion).
For what concerns brenches of companies that sell GPR equipment in Venezuela I don't know any. Instead if you are looking for companies that proviode GPR services in Venezuela you can ask Beta PLC, to which we (Schinelli Consulting) provide NDT services in the Caribbean and in Venezuela.
