why did a back wall echo present in root defect (LOF, Crack or even a artificial root notch)in a pipe to pipe butt weld. The defect indication is comming just above the backwallecho with a strong amplitude.

In regards the indication detected you have 3 alternatives to make a decision about the type of inidication:

1-The indication is in the LW mode backwall? iof this is the case you have a lack of penetration, undercut or shrinkage (all asosiated to the root pass)
2-The indication is in both modes LW and SW? then the situation here is diferent, you indication is a side wall lack of fusion conected with the ID.
3- The indication is in SW mode? then you have a lamination, and this is a discontinuity out of the weld metal.
