screen castings with defects

Hi,
We are in to manufacturing of Orthopedic Implants by Investment Casting process since last two years. The castings are made from ss316L.
The castings are fully machined and many times we come across the defects seen after machining. Since it is an implant, we donot weld the defect and the castings are rejected.
Please suggest full proof NDT to screen out the castings with defects [seen after machining].

Due to complex geometry, I believe there is no other way than radioscopy.

It is possible to use ultrasonic scanner for this purpose.

Depending on the geometry of the part the required effort can be small or eventually larger, but in most cases such tests are possible.

It is also possible to make a multi-transducer head and measure quite quickly the sound scattered by the object (simplified ultrasonic holography). In many cases this can be the simplest method. With regular object shapes it works even quite good in the air.

If you could send a picture of the raw casting, I would be able to make a more concrete proposal.

There is a possibility that the defects could be found using infrared thermography.

Are the parts essentially a shaped solid, or do they include voids by design? Are they generally planar in shape or more of a full 3D shape? How thick are they? What type and size of defects are of concern?

If you could send me a few photos of the part and of a defect, I would be glad to get more specific about it.

A combination of NDT methods, qualification of the investment casting process itself to minimize the discontinuities, right use of SQC tools etc. will be helpful. In other words, an integrated approach would be ideal.

We have had good success with qualification of SS investment castings for nuclear applications.
