ASNT Lev 3, which method is the most difficult?

Hi

I passed the ASNT Basic and RT method in May this year, and I am planning to get the MT/PT in mid October and UT/VT i mid November. I am feeling a bit stressed to pass these exams, failure is not an option. the exams will take place in Germany, at TUV Nord.

I have acquired the handbooks, Q/A booklets and the Study guides. The PT feels more demanding than the MT is my immediate reaction right now.

Will the literature stated above be sufficient ? Any warnings or words of advice ? Which method is the most demanding?

Best Regards from Sweden/ Ulf Hansen

Ulf, I have heard that PT is difficult for many but it was not for me. I have taken it about four times and have never had a problem.

Congrats on the RT Level III, I have passed it many times and every time I go "really, I actually passed that?" When I walk out of the RT Level III I am sure I know nothing about RT but, apparently I do!

Failure may not be an option but it could be a fact and you should never feel bad about failing a Level III NDT exam. Failure shows you what you don't know. I always have a pen and paper in the car after the exam and as soon as I get in the car I write down as much as I can remember about what I didn't know, then I go and find out about it. I think that being a Level III is as much about being able to say "I don't know but I'll find out" as it is about telling them what you do know.

I wonder though, why you are bothering with ASNT when all of Europe is EN473? I have been going through a Swedac audit this week for a Swedish company and while they have accepted MY ASNT Level III certs they require EN473 for the Level IIs. There is discussion in the company that I will challenge the EN473 Level III exams so that there will be no questions when it comes to my Level III qualifications (note: I have held ASNT Level III for over 20 years which may be why Swedac accepted it). I don't want to upset anyone here but it seems that the European system for Level III certification MAY be more comprehensive than ASNT so why not stick with that?

Hi Ulf,

I've passed my MT LVL III paper, well, I would say MT would be the easiest for most people who took the exams. For most, the paper from easiest would be MT, UT, RT, PT, ET. PT might have sounded easy on our level 2 but I guess a lot of the students had forgotten or overlooked the very basic of this technique. A lot of my counterparts had to take PT & ET many times.

I will not be able to comment much on other subjects as I've only passed my MT and had not taken others yet. Trying to clear my basic first (failed on my first try). MT will be sufficient if you studied the Q&A, study guide. Have more confidence in yourself...

However, what William said is true also, in Europe, most of the places are only looking at EN473, only France had their own qualifications (worked in France for 5 yrs). Just some points for you to think about it. Best of luck in your exams!

Hi William

Lots of discussions within my company aswell. I smiled when I read that you are also having these discussions. Problem can occur if a company, for instance a company producing paper machinery with pressure vessels, want to export to the US or Canada. Some of the inspectors are very picky about the ASNT, especially if the CP-189 is stated somewhere in their papers. It also applies on military equipment...

It might be an advantage to have someone having the ASNT lev 3 and the written practice based on both SNT-TC-1A and CP-189. They generally accept EN 473, but it is a risk involved to lose business for a contracted NDT subcontractor. Better safe than sorry. And they sometimes just want to see a ASNT certificate.

I have the exact same feelings after the RT like you had. The german gentlemen who watched over my exam told me that RT was really infamous. He told me that UT was the easiest?

There is a second way of getting a EN 473 certificate, and it is to build on the ASNT making it into a ASNT ACCP exam, which is compatible with ISO 9712. Fee is just above 500 USD/method. I would have done this if it would have been possible to take the ACCP procedure and practical exam in Europe since I was already taking the ASNT. TÜV Nord in Germany can then transform this into a valid EN 473 certificate.

My feeling is that ASNT is more demanding regarding theoretical knowledge. EN 473, on the other hand, takes more effort, more exams (plus time/money) to fulfill. The thing that Swedac reacts on is the lack of procedure and practical level 2 exam within the ASNT. They perhaps felt at ease looking at your long experience. A new guy would probably not have been approved.

Only 14 have a valid ASNT certificate in Sweden (pop: 9 mill). I think 4 or 5 on RT.

Best regards

Ulf

I passed both PT and MT. PT was a lot more difficult, mostly because of many questions about afteremulsification. I was finished with PT only some 15 minutes before the time ran out. I finished MT at about half the time. We generally use water based PT in Europe. MT contained a lot of questions regarding demagnetizing of different objects.

Next step is UT and VT. Tomorrow.

Ulf,
Congrats! I found the PT the most difficult as well. The questions seemed geared towards the physical chemistry and other properties that are determined by the manufacturer and less at processing and defects.

Even in the US there is difficulty with certification recognition. I am from a multi industry background but currenly work to NAS 410 (equivalent to EN 4179). I also carry ASNT Level III. I have to balance the recertification requirements of both and have written our practice to encompass both requirements to ensure that both are met (and neither of my certs get dropped). There is no NANBT is the US to centrally certify to, so it gets even more confusing as I have to use an outside vendor for my testing. I have heard there is currently some debate with NADCAP if the ACCP certification meets NAS 410 requirements, but do not know any of the details. If anyone else has info on this, I would be very interested.

Hi

-Thanks Amy!

I remembered getting questions in the PT exam about meandering cracks in plastic and the temperature needed to produce an aluminium crack reference block with a torch. Intercrystalline cracks, chemistry, corrosion, etc etc

It is indeed some difficulty involved in having a couple of these standards in use at the same time within a company. It is not common knowledge in Sweden how to properly write the documents within in quality system to control these issues. The EN-473 is very simple, all certificates are third party approved and managed, no responsibility for the certification is delegated to the company. I will start to look into these matters beginning next year.

Best regards/Ulf

Hello, I am planning on taking the ASNT Level III UT exam in 30 days. My math skills are very lacking. I am reading the ASNT UT study guide. I am guessing this may be the most difficult of the exams. Those of you that have completed this exam....was there a study material you found to be useful? I am very worried about this exam. Thank you in advance for your help. Mick

Is this the first level III examination?
Before the method examination, the Basic examination shall be done.
The most useful study material is that referenced on the study guide.

Hi Mick

It is difficult to be equally good in all NDT disciplines. UT is certainly not my strongest side. In fact I was so confident that I failed the UT exam that I started to plan for a retake before I checked my ID on the ASNT homepage. I was totally amazed that I passed. Probably a very close call.

The UT exam is not entirely consisting of mathematics, though Snells law is important to know and also trigonometry in connection with angle probes. The exam also consists of A-scans pictures, enterpretation towards procedures and technical questions. It is not considered to be the most difficult method. I passed with the help of Q/A booklets, Study Guide and the ASNT handbook for UT.

Thank you Ulf. I have passed the Basic, MT, PT & RT this month but the UT I saved for last as it is not my strongest. I heard there were a lot of immersion questions on the test and I have never done immersion testing. I wouldn't know where to begin. And, like I said, my math skills are lacking. I am good with shear wave on welds but that is about it. My friend failed the UT initially and had to take a refresher course to pass it.

Its always the same with exams - one is expected to learn and regurgitate facts one will never ever use again.

There were quite a few immersion testing questions on the UT Level III paper I sat. I was experienced in it though. If you have no immersion testing knowledge and/or experience, I suggest to avoid disappointment and wasted effort you do the same as your friend. You have to weigh this against time and money spent. If you are well up on other UT theory and are confident about finding your way round procedures you can pass knowing just basic immersion testing facts, e,g, Vwater = circa 0,25Vsteel.

Good luck

Hello

What about the ET lev 3 exam ? I will attend the exam early in July this year, and have started with the Study Guide, which seems to contain a lot of equations. What can be expected at the exam ? I also have the Q/A and the ASNT NDT handbook.

Hello

The same applies to me as well, I am ASNT Level III in UT & MT, and both passed in first attempt in May and Oct 2012, but the same didn't go in my way for ET level III. I scored 65 %, but i felt the probable reasons for not passing were lack of practical experience as many questions were on Interpretation of signals and i did not understand normalized plane diagram theory, however i have some handson on tube inspection, but its really difficult subject. The basics and types of probes etc, are relatively easy to understand.

I look forward for comments from expert on which topic to emphasies and can i get latest ASNT ET study guide? If anyone has the same plz email me on = swadesh.sngh@gmail.com

Hi Mick

I went to Germany to get the ET late last year, and I passed on the first attempt. This time I only concentrated on 1 method. Otherwise I took 2 exams on each occasion. It felt like I guessed on some of the diagrams.....

I do not have the faintest clue if it was a close call. For us non-US citizens it may also be a language thing, just to understand and to interprete the questions is an obstacle.

Hello mr.Ulf Hansen,
I am Ananda Gopal Mukhopadhyay, from Gujarat, India.I am ASNT NDT LEVEL 3 (UT, RT, PT, MPI) and just gave the ET and VT examination In Mumbai, India.before appearing for the examination, I found that 24 were appearing for the exam. Out of the 24,22 were repeated candidates I, e they failed in the first try. Only me and my friend, rakesh were the only ones who were appearing in the exam for the first try.
This made me annoy as I thought I cannot pass the exam. However, it was easy. The trick was to understand every line of the study guides and not only that, you have to get some outer knowledge too.If I make you sit in the exam with all the study guides, you will not be abe able to pass because most of the questions are asked indirectly.for example, if I ask a first grade child what is 1+2, he will answer 3.but if i ask what number must be subtracted from 3 to get one, he will be confused. So, in my knowledge , ET is the most difficult exam to pass .
