Can anybody help me to find out the grain size of stell 11Cr2Ni.

It's seem that you don't understand my question,Ed.
As I know, We can perform UT when the grain size in steel< 10 wave length.So,I need to know the grain size of 11Cr2Ni.

Use a lower frequency probe to accomplish UT on coarse-grained materials. If its a weld then you may need to use twin crystal longitudinal wave angle probes to penetrate the columnar grain structure.

Lanh, I think Ed T. was suggesting that you could determine the grain size by actually looking at the sample after it is polished and etched. The only thing published material will give you is an approximate range for the processed metal. If you are doing a weld inspection the grain size is not easily predicted since it will be a function of the welding heat input parameters...you will need to actually put a probe to the metal and find out for yourself if it can be tested. There is no text-book way around it.

Nigel, this may be a separate topic but since you recommended it...I have long been curious about how a "twin-crystal" L-wave angle beam probe gets a reputation as being a superior solution to inspecting coarse-grained materials. How is it superior to a monoelement probe with the same incident angle? When I do a Civa model of the conditions there is no improvement and I have the added limitation with a twin crystal that it is only providing a maximum returned signal if the target occurs at the Tx-Rx centre of beam crossing points. Length sizing with a twin crystal probe is significantly greater than with a monoelement probe. For the same size probe the elements in the twin are effectively half the width of a monoelement so we might even expect slightly less pressure at the same transmitted soundpath. When I actually place a probe on steel and use a SDH target, the only difference I see is the entry noise is greater with the monoelement probe. And although I can find a SDH at a depth where both have the same sensitivity, moving to a greater depth the twin element probe sensitivity quickly drops off compared to the monoelement.

Grain size can only be determined destructively (as mentioned by former and latter Eds). An example document to follow for destructive metallography would be ASTM E112.

Some contribution to this interesting Nigel and Ed posts, and Sorry if I am wrong but It seems that dual element transducers were created to explore a specific zone of the material, at a particular depth, for defects with a particular geometry and a particular orientation. For example if a component always show the same type of cracking, and the crack occurs at specific well known zone, dual transducers could be design with the proper roof angle to have this type of “focusing effect(?)” at the proper sound path to improve the signal amplitude from reflectors at this distance. I think that for good detection using dual is preferable a planar reflector who rest in a well oriented plane, the geometry and orientation of the reflector and his relation with external geometrical restrictions as weld crown, could make the dual transducer less sensitive compared with a mono-transmitter-receiver element or a very good option, but it is important to remember that each dual L-transducers with an specific roof angle are linked with an specific depth in the material.
