roots with backing strips

UT - Manual

when doing a root examination when a welded backing bar/strip is used what are we looking for in terms of defects? should it be fully fused? partially? is there a EN/ISO for this?

please advise?

Hi Ant Purdy
I think that there is not any EN / ISO standard about welded joint type.
Perhaps you could find some help in the standards EN ISO 5817 and 6520. If the welded joints are in a European pressure vessel, the EN 13445 could be applicable
In may opinion examining the root should be treated as if it were a full penetration weld without backing bar / strip.

Diego,
I agree. This joint is a variant of butt weld and should be treated according to the regulatory environment in which it operates.
Very little help for UT examination with EN ISO 5817 and 6520 !
Greetings.

The backing bar is an aid for the welder only. Lack of fusion to the backing bar, is not relevant to the strength of the weld.
All the best

Andrew,
I practiced this joint mostly in construction (funds tank, side by side plates on beams, casing, etc..), then non-removable backing.
Reading your syntesys makes me think that indeed, once ensured root penetration, I have never been concerned with the lack of fusion de backing, nor have I ever been in any specific place this requirement.
Should be noted however, according to good practices, if this requirement were to be placed, then the flat grinding of external cap to scan by zero degrees would be a requirement.
greetings
Mario

I have found it easier, to scan from the inside and going through the backing strip.

all the best
