is it difficult for a girl to find an NDT job?

Hi there!

Can anyone share some information about how difficult it is for a girl to find an NDT job?
How many girls work in NDT at all? Do the employeers prefer hiring guys instead of girls?
I am from Russia, going to study UT in Russia (it's 2 month course) beginning this February, then get experience in Russia. Then I would like to work for an international company. The problem with schooling in Russia is that we have different standards with the rest of the world. Are there any institutions which will be able to assess my knowledge and certify me according to international or european standards?

Thanks in advance for any kind of advice or information.
Best regards.

Dear Andreas,

Thanks a lot, I have found some institutions in Russia which can certify me acc to EN 473-ISO 9712. I've also got some personal messages from forum users on my e-mail advising to get these certificates. So many thanks to these guys too. Someone told me that ASNT is better than EN/ISO (why?), but ASNT is not available here.

Dear Forum users,

I have two more questions currently:

1) when I am EN/ISO certified how good are my chances to get a job in an internatinal company? I mean my country is not the part of EU and I will need a work permit for Europe. Definitely the same for N.America. How willing are the companies to deal with visa and work permit issues? Or i will have to get it myself to become eligible?
2) If I get my work experience in Russia first will it be recognised abroad?
Usually people get assessment papers from their supervisors (with name, phone number, company name and so on - to check if it's a real document), but I will have to translate these papers. And even if someone wants to call my russian supervisor, he/she will not be able to speak English most probably...

Please advise. Any relevant information or example of your russian co-workers you might have are very welcome.

Best regards,
Marina

experience is what really counts.
hit lots of companies for a job + you relocating if nothing local.

girl or not the best way is to expert techniques and gain wide knowledge.

with experience you will get to know the job market, demands etc.

if you work in Russia then your experience will travel but you may still have visa issues. certificates ISO and in English will be demanded here.

good luck.

Aerospace is a BIG employer of NDT technicians, from all sectors such as new build structures, engines, components to operational scheduled inspections. You'll nee to work towards gaining FAA/CAA licence. EN4179 is the controlling personnel certification standard. You can find much about it on training company websites.

Good luck

  • Much easier to define setups before inspection
  • Easier to decipher geometry echoes from real defects
  • Oriented defects (e.g. cracks) are imaged better
