Obituary - Michael D.C. Moles 1948-2014

Michael D.C. Moles 1948-2014

Michael Moles, a long-time member of the NDT community, died of cancer, 13 February 2014 in Toronto.

Born in the UK, Michael was educated at the University of Cambridge (PhD Physical Metallurgy 1972). He completed an M.B.A. from McMaster University in 1984 and was a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario. From 1972 until 1974 Michael worked in Zambia then moved to Canada in 1975. From 1977 until 1996 Michael worked for Ontario Hydro Research Division where he held a variety of positions in the NDE department including research scientist and acting Section Head. From 1997 until 2013 he was with Olympus NDT (formerly R/D Tech).

Over his nearly 40 year career in NDT, Michael contributed over 150 technical papers and reports at conferences and invited presentations. He was a technical editor of several books including the English translation of the Japanese Tip Echo Handbook, First edition by Prof. Harumi in 1989, Introduction to Phased Array Technology Applications by R/D Tech, 2004, Automated Ultrasonic Testing for Pipeline Girth Welds, by Ed Ginzel, 2006, Advances in Phased Array Ultrasonic Technology Applications, Olympus NDT, 2007 and IIW handbook on “Phased Arrays for Weld Inspections”, 2012.

Dr. Moles was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, where he co-supervised students working on accurate crack sizing using digital signal processing. He was also a co-instructor on a graduate course on advanced ultrasonic inspection techniques.

Michael will be remembered as an active and enthusiastic member of the NDT community. His memberships included ASME, ASTM, AWS, ASNT and CINDE. He was a committee member with several organisations working on ultrasonic testing.

Since 2005, Michael - www.ndt.net/myndt/profile.php?id=2302 - was an active contributor to NDT.net, with 46 papers that he has authored or co-authored as well as the much-viewed webinar on the forum on the “Benefits of phased array for weld inspection” www.ndt.net/forum/thread.php?nc=1&rootID=31269

Michael was a man who valued fairness. He was an egalitarian at heart and would often support the underdog, even taking on minor crusades against the “system” and its perceived inequalities. He was always ready to lend a helping hand as seen by his numerous contributions to the NDT.net forum.
Michael Moles will be missed by all of us in the NDT community, a community that he was such a vibrant part of.

Ed,

Thank you so much for writing such a beautiful rememberance of Michael. And especially for including some of his activities here in NDT.net.

I personally met Michael the last time at the WCNDT 2012 in Durban and I feel now lucky that I recorded a video of one of his presentations, at least partially.

Michael, you will be greatly missed and not forgotten.

Thanks for this obituary Ed.
I met Michael a couple of times, had a few email conversations with him and read several of his papers. His knowledge and insight around ultrasonics and especially phased array will be missed.
Mt condolences to his family and friends

Ed

Many Thanks for posting this, I was really sorry to hear about Michael's death, He has been a friend for many years. A couple of years back I had the honour of preparing his citation for the BINDT Nemet Prize, which we awarded for his long contribution in advancement of NDT. I had a long talk about his background, and learnt much impressed me even more.

I last saw Michael and his wife in Brazil last year, at the time it seemed like he was getting better, a great shame this was not the case.

In our industry he was one of the greats. He will be sadly missed.

Its very sad and a great loss for Michael's family, friends, colleagues, the NDT and the wider engineering communities he served so diligently. However his good name and his body of work which contributed enormously to the technical advances made in NDT will endure and continue to inform and inspire many people now and in the future.

Michael Moles I salute you and mourn your passing.g

Thank you for posting Michael's obituary. I passed it on to the IPEIA committee in Alberta where Michael has made presentations in the past. He will certainly be missed there.

Thanks for posting this obituary.

I do not know Mr. Michael personally but I keep seeing his mails in the NDT forum.

It is indeed a sad loss not only to his family and friends but particularly to the NDT community.

I had a chance to see the R/D Tech Phased Array equipment and technology some time around the year 2000 and I was impressed by the advancements they have made at that time and I am sure that Mr. Michael had an important contribution in it.

I pray that his soul shall rest in piece and wish fortitude to his family and friends to bear with the loss.

Very sad news.

Michael was one of the pillars of the NDT community who will be sadly missed.

I had the privilege of working along side Michael in my days with RD Tech and later Olympus NDT. He was a champion, worthy of the highest praise. I remember our days in Berlin and I will toast you in our usual way. Cheers Michael, and God Bless.

You summed up the man quite eloquently. The few times I have had a chance to cross paths with Michael were cherished indeed.

He will be missed.
