AUT Zonal discrimination.

Dear colleagues

What is the benefit of two gate for on channel in Zonal discrimination?and what kind of couplant we should use between wedge and phased array probe to make sure that is stable for long time?

The purpose of two gates in the zonal discrimination is that the former usually works to 5% for the flight time and the second usually works 20% for amplitude, usually for inspection AUT scanners used with water as a coupling .

Mark, as Fabian noted, the 2 gates are time and amplitude. This simplifies analysis and also makes for a much smaller file size when constructing the strip chart (essentially 2 bytes for each gate at each sampled position along the scan path). Although water is the preferred couplant between the wedge and steel you asked about the coupling between the probe and wedge. A heavy oil or silicone grease is adequate but you should not consider ANY probe to wedge couplant as long term. The condition of the interface coupling between the probe and wedge should be checked daily...it may not need to be replaced daily but it should at least be checked daily. Generally looking at the interface through the wedge is adequate and to a large extent the coupling quality is verified by a stable calibration of the zonal targets.

OK, the couplant between the wedge and the probe, I use the SKF grease LGWA2/0.2 Wide temperature - High load, this grease use whit the pipe wizard, i recomend you.

Edward please I recomend my post http://www.ndt.net/forum/thread.php?admin=&msgID=53186&rootID=53186#53186 Thank you.

Re: AUT Zonal discrimination.
As Ed was saying you should check your probe coupling everyday, even every shift. Regarding coupling, I tend to favor couplant like silicon grease, because coupling is better than let's say Echogel. But you should choose your coupling wisely. Some have a higher impedance than others and you will have to crank your dB up considerably.
