TIG Sugaring RT Film

hello there,

anyone who knows where I can find some images of radio film with a defect of root welding called " rochage " in french and " sugaring " or oxidation in english ?
is this type of defect easy to interpret on RT Films ?

GTAW of stainless steel tubes butt weld, full penetration and inadequately protected by gas backing...

thanking you

I was not familiar with the term, so I did a quick search online. The link below would suggest that sugaring is a visual cue that indicates internal protection was inadequate (heavy oxidation that appears blackened and uneven, like burnt sugar). It goes on to say that welds looking like this may have hidden problems, like lack of fusion, porosity (both potentially detectable with NDT), as well as poor corrosion resistance (overlooked by NDT?). This last one (sensitization) would be of particular concern, as you would use chemical-based, or destructive, tests for this problem (e.g. ASTM A763, or ASTM A923) I believe.

thank you
the link is interesting, but my concern is to find a RT film where it is possible to " see " this kind of defect if it occurs.
you can see a photo here : http://www.soudeurs.com/piece-jointe/metallurgie-du-soudage-et-soudabilite/4170d1342936232-probleme-de-rochage-vb_01_soudure_rochee_01.jpg
it is not always possible to perform a Visual or Penetrant Test of a Weld, especially when you weld a stainless steel tube.

Download Virus Scan recommended!

Here I submit two (2) photographs taken by digital camera of two radiographs of a 2” NB Stainless steel (SS 316) weld joint which show oxide formation partially in the weld length.

From this photograph, appearance of oxide image in the radiograph can be understood in comparison to radiographic appearance of other weld defects ,although some limitation exists in clarity of images in reproduction in digital camera.

A short description provided of the nature of this defect with the photograph document.

His defect is of very common occurrence in SS welding where proper protection from weld metal oxidation is not taken care of.

It is a common problem in Cr containing steels, such as 9% Cr, where the oxides give a feathery appearance. The problem is that a lack of side wall fusion may get masked by this appearance.
