TOFD block notch orientation

Dear All,

Can you answer for the below statement:

For PAUT examination, Is it mandatory to make different qualification block for each weld cofiguration? Code- ASME Sec V,article 4, IX 435.4.

Also please explain about notch orientaion. I recd one qual block from the contarctor having notches perpendiculr to the fusion zone.
Code- ASME Sec V,article 4, IX 435.5.

Please refer sketch and tell me which one is correct , number 1 or number 2.

Krishnamoorthi,

Yes, it's mandatory to make different qualification blocks for different weld configurations.

Number 2 notch shall be applicable for weld fusion faces, where as number 1 shown can be used for the volume coverage confirmation.

Dear Krishnamoorthi,

For vertical defect orientation as shown in your drawing (no.1) you may need to implement tandem PA as normal sector scan will oversize or undersize such defects

Each time that the weld configuration changes, the geometric indication from the weld received by multiple receivers will provide lot of signals within the band pass. Hence the change in the Qual. block. Normally the qual block can be used for a range of thickness

This drawing for the Qual. block, I feel, is to confirm that the PAUT setup can characterise and guage the size of the defect. Is the procedure for DGS sizing of the Weld, or it may have AWS D1.1?

With warm regards,
Ramakrishnan
