Coating Thickness Measurement

Hi,

I am trying to find a device in order to obtain the thicknesses values of a Aluminium Coating over Nickel base substrate.

Can anybody help me?

Not sure if we can help but what thicknesses are involved? Presumably microns of Aluminium over mm of Nickle. What form does the Nickle take... wire, plate rod, foam, sinter, coating, etc?

The thickness goes from 0,015 to 0,075 mm.

The base material goes from 1 mm to 3 mm aprox.

Hi Sergio

Providing the aluminium is pure then this should be possible with an eddy current procedure.

My honest advice is that you should try Fischer Technology from Germany for an off the shelf solution http://www.helmut-fischer.de/ (a competitor of ours) first.

If this material is too thin for them then I feel that with one of our standard instruments (e.g. Phasec 2s www.phasec2.com) a procedure could be developed or possibly using our conductivity meter (AutoSigma 3000 http://www.hocking.com/as_3000.htm).

John Hansen's advice is correct. There are several suppliers who should be able to supply hand-held gauges to measure Al on Ni economically... search on Google for 'Coating Thickness Guages' if necessary.

The task may get more unpredictable for Ni alloys and/or at changes in component section. If you need a computerised or automated system contact me separately.
