I can't find acceptance criteria of visual inspection in ASME Sections : porosity, undercut, undersized weld, ......

You are speaking about "porosity, undercut, undersized weld", so the acceptance criteria you need is about welds. Which section or part of the ASME are you speaking about?
If you are speaking about ASME BPV code sect. VIII div. 1 the Subsection B part UW, paragraphs UW-33, UW-35, UW-36 can help you.
If you are speaking about ASME BPV code sect. III div. 1 the Subsection NB Article NB-4000 paragraphs from NB-4400 can help you.
If you are speaking about ASME BPV code sect. I the part PW paragraphs PW-33, PW-34, PW-35 and PW-36 can help you.

Thank you. But I can't find the acceptance criteria for inspecting porosity ( type, diameter, amount), undersized weld ( butt and fillet weld ). We're fabricating 2 steam boilers. Can u help me ?
And should we use ASME Sec I or VIII Div I for steam boiler ?

You need to mention what part of the boiler you are inspecting. If it is boiler proper then it is definitely ASME Section I.

If it is piping you need to look at ASME B 31.1.

Regarding undersized weld: Weld size should be specified on the drawings by whomever engineered the boiler.

Makes me a little worried if your company is manufacturing steam boilers and you have to ask questions on what code to use. Dose your company have ASME stamps?

Thank you for your instructions. Because we've just begun to apply ASME Code to manufacture boiler. And what about the porosity ?

Cannot answer your question without more information. What part of the boiler? What edition of the Code are you working to? What is thickness and material type?

What country are you? Who is the AIA?

I'm checking the boiler body . The material is SS400. And the thickness is 18 mm.

The material needs to be an SA or SB number to comply with ASME Saection II.
As stated previously by another poster you will find the info you need in PW 33 34 35 & 36.

You seriously need to consider a training course for you company in ASME Code compliance.

I do not want to be anywhere near that boiler when it is fired up.

PTC,
I wan also to add that Beside of ASME you also have some local Boiler regulation approval to carry out any activity related with the boiler .
& about porosity then chart is there for compression in sec VIII
Thanks & Regards,

I still have a query just like the owner of this thread. It still unclear the Visual criteria for ASME VIII for production, and ASME IX for WQT, material is SS400 (also other material)?Hope to hear the instruction from all of you.

defects that we can find with visual examination are the same as defects in pt & mt because all are in the surface of the weld not internal
so you can look at appendix 6 & 8 ASME SEC VIII for the acceptance criteria which said no linear defect/ and for rounded defect up to 3/16 in and for the distance between the amount is 1/16in
and also for misalignment and some other defects look at uw33 35 36

Dear experts

Thanks a lot about this beneficial discussion, Since the talk is about boiler and boiler defects who have an idea about the inside tubes scale thickness reference values, what are the acceptable thickness values and at what value of the thickness we start to think about boiler inside chemical washing .

Thanks in advance

Look under BPV Code, Section VIII, Division 1, Appendix 4 for porosity. Undercut is a reduction in thickness and shall not exceed a 1/32'' or 10% of the nominal thickness of the adjoining surface, which ever is less per UW-35. Undersized welds depends on what the engineer designed the specific joint to. Circ seams cant be below the base metal and cant have excessive reinforcement above prescribed in the table under UW-35.

You have to follow ASME sec-I for boiler drums if it is unfired and if fired boiler you have to follow ASME sec-IV.

If you are speaking about ASME BPV code section I the part PW paragraphs PW-33, PW-34, PW-35, and PW-36 can help you.

Open to surface porosity is not allowed as this will good to start corrosion and pitting and where it starts how you know is it just a small porosity or wormhole? Go for Penetrant test. It will increase the life of the vessel.

As‐welded surfaces are permitted; however, the surface
of the welds shall be sufficiently free from coarse ripples,
grooves, overlaps, abrupt ridges, and valleys to avoid
stress raisers. Undercuts shall not exceed 1/32 in. (0.8 mm)
or 10% of the wall thickness, whichever is less, and shall
not encroach on the required section thickness. The surfaces
of the finished weld shall be suitable to permit proper
interpretation of the nondestructive examinations. If
there is a question regarding the surface condition of
the weld when interpreting the radiographic film, the film
shall be compared to the actual weld surface for determination
of acceptability.

There is a corrosion allowance given by the manufacturer or you can calculate the required thickness for pressure and temperature requirement. Please follow the design code.

If thickness less than the design thickness ask the owner and the owner-designer to change the tube or recalculate for RBI.
It is the owner or owner-designer who is responsible for every risk-based inspection.
