Immersion UT

Dear Friends

what is the minimum diameter and thickness can be tested with automated ultrasonic immersion technique?

is it feasible to test 4mm OD x 0.5mm thickness using immersion technique?

Hi Nirav

What are you trying to test for? With a fairly specialised high frequency setup it might be possible to check wall thickness, concentricity etc. It's probably too thin for other tests.

Hello joe

initially i am looking for flaw detection.

i know that thickness is very less but that is what one of my client asked for.

It is not a problem to test pipes with even much smaller diameter ans wall thickness. You need only sufficient high frequency. 0.5 mm can be tested with about 10MHz, but you need transducer with linear focus and good mechanical adjustment. We have made some systems for similar application, this works quite perfectly.

dear friend,
6.6 mm OD and .45 mm succesfully inspected with curved concave phased array probe in immersion UT. 10 MHz frequency used.

Hi Nirav,

It is possible to use some frequency domain techniques to measure very thin layers, thinner than you may anticipate. It should be possible to measure down to about 0.24mm using a 10 MHz centre frequency transducer. If the inside of the tube is filled with water then this can drop to about 0.05mm. Set-up is key though.
