Magnetic Flux Leakage

Hi, does anyone know why the Magnetic Flux Leakage technique is used to inspect piping (externally) as opposed to Ultrasonic Corrosion Mapping specifically in the Water industry?

Thanks

I can't comment on the water industry, but in the oil and gas industry, huge amounts of ferrous piping are inspected using the Magnetic Flux Leakage technique compared to ultrasonic techniques because:
a. the equipment is less expensive
b. the inspection is faster
c. the level of operator skill required is lower

MFL is very most sensitive to internal wall loss. Pigging is used extensively in large diameter pipes. UT corrosion mappind is usually carried out from an external surface to look for internall wall lose. It is not normally used internally due to coupling problems and masking caused by any internal concretions. MFL is not affected by non magnetic concretions and will also detect tight surface breaking cracks which UT corrosion mapping would not detect even under the most favourable circumstances. MFL scanners can also be used externally here UT corrosion mapping will give a more accurate wall thickness. Sometimes a MFL san is used to identify suspect areas and any critical regions are measured with UT.

Hallo Chris ,
internal wall loss detection by MFL ?
Detecting cracks when using it for crossion mapping?

I my experience you need a different setup for corrosion mapping at crack detection.

Wall loss detection difficult , may use only for monitoring and to be verify by UT.

MFL is sensitive to change in physically properties of the material under test.

Otherwise I agree with Bruce answers.
