sir,
Ok it is possible but what kind of defect we will get either volumetric defect or planar defect and how true indication we will noticed. Indication may be either relevant or non relavant for RT on fillet weld.

Kaushal,

In RT you will get a imposed image of the weld. relavant and non relavant film interpetator should analyze, hope ur RI will look the job nor drawing prior interpetation.

can get all types of defects.

Kaushal,

Will somebody trained in RT be doing the inspection and interpreting the results?

Cheers,
Frank

Why do you want to do RT On fillet weld? Since it is a fillet weld, you will have a lack of penetration indication on all your film which will be next to impossible to assess.

Since it is a fillet weld, it means this weld is not crucial otherwise it would be a FPW. All the situations I have encountered require a MT inspection or PT for non ferromagnetic. So again, why use a technique that is more expensive and dangerous?

Some fillet welds are very critical to the weldment. Also, many grrove welds also have associated fillet welds. This is one reason to have multiple welds shown on a weld symbol.

Typically "stand alone" fillet welds such as those that connect stiffners to webs are not typically radiographed. Structural welds of this type are normally examined with MT or PT depending on the material. However; this type of fillet weld can be radiobraphed for certain discontinuities i.e., porosity, inclusions, LOF, etc.

Gerald

The RT is applicable weather SWSI or SWDI but the requirement of RT needs full penetration joint to see the defects of weldment which is deposited on the groove or v plate jonts.

If you required NDT then better advise to go UT, this UT report would be authontic for fillet jonts.

Babar

If RT possible for fillet weld than how we are going to place the film to capture the image of the weld ?Please suggest me.

Dear All

We never seen and don't have knowledge about RT on fillet joint, we explained in my previous mail why not possible to take RT on FILLET joint.

If somebody know possibility then let us explain for further getting knowledge on this crucial topic.

Best regards.

Babar,
It most definitely is a possibility. I remember many years ago doing RT of Fillet Welds during my TWI RT Training. However it is not a method widely used.

Although Radiography and Ultrasonic Testing can be used on fillet welds with some success. They are typically limited to groove weld examinations.

Visual, Magnetic Particle, and Liquid Penetrant methods are used typically to examine fillet welds.
