TOFD Stand Alone-API1104


Dear Gents,

My question is about the suitability of using the TOFD stand alone method for a work scope with acceptance criteria referenced to API 1104.Since the API 1104 is a workmanship criteria hence the assessment will be based on the amplitude and length of the indication.Is it relevant for the stand alone TOFD to be utilized?

As per my understanding TOFD is a non-amplitude based technique and the use of workmanship criteria will not be appropriate in this case.However there is a sentence in the API 1104 stated- Para 11.4.7.3 "Other automated techniques,reference refelectors,reference sensitivities,scanning sensitivity,evaluation sensitivities and evaluation level may be used if demonstrated to be equivalent to the pulse-echo technique for the detection and evaluation of weld imperfection".

Does this sentence will be a valid justification to support the use of non amplitude based/non pulse echo technique to be implemented?

TOFD is a great tool for inspection although it has its limitations and most probably the biggest reason it can't be used as a stand alone method. Typically as a rule of thumb the first 3-4mm is known as a dead zone with TOFD, additionally the skill of the technicians interpretation levels may hinder the evaluation one way or another. Under skilled technicians may under evaluate or over evaluate indications causing a land slide of issues.
I believe another issue that has been brought to light in the latest edition of ASME V is that they now require formal level of training for PA & TOFD.

My apologies for not mentioning it earlier that the surface and the near surface are covered by the use of encoded creep wave.Actually the focus of my question is about the use of non amplitude based and non pulse echo techniques for a work scope that subjected to the workmanship criteria which is in this case -API 1104.
