EFFECTIVE HEIGHT OF PHASED PARRAY PROBE

Dear all ,

Please some one help me to understand that what is EFFECTIVE HEIGHT OF PHASED ARRAY PROBE.
(as per ASME SEC V Table V-421.)

Example: no of element-16
1st ele. h -- 11.2mm
wedge ang-- 36deg
pitch -- 0.6mm

16 x 0.6 = 9.6 mm

Pitch = element width + gap in between each one

Usually "aperture" is measured in the active direction and height is measured in the passive direction:

Imagine a 16 element probe, with a pitch of 0.6mm. With elements arranged like this:

If you fired all 16 elements, the aperture would be 16 x 0.6 = 9.6mm (left to right dimension), and the height would be the height of each element (vertical dimension). Unfortunately, my ASCII graphics abilities have dwindled since the heyday of the 80's. You'll have to use your imagination that the above illustration is to scale.

Usually height is the length of each crystal but ASME V, Art 4, Table V-421 defines height as the active aperture.

It does not change a life, but the exact calculation for virtual aperture of a PA configuration is:
(Active elements-1)*pitch+e (element width). As an example, virtual aperture for 16 elements pitch 0,5 element size "e" 0,4 mm is:
15*0.6+0.4=9.4mm.
Please notice that "e" value is an essential variable according to ASME, but this value is not written in the PA probes data sheet (at least the old ones).
