The ASTM International image quality
indicator permits the specification of a
number of levels of radiographic
sensitivity, depending on the
requirements of the job. For example, the
specifications may call for a radiographic
quality level of 2-2T. The first symbol, 2,
indicates that the image quality indicator
shall be 2 percent of the thickness of the
specimen; the second symbol (2T)
indicates that the hole having a diameter
twice the image quality indicator
thickness shall be visible on the finished
radiograph. The quality level 2-2T is
probably the one most commonly
specified for routine radiography.

I agree 100% with Diego.

Other way of expressing the same...The first 2 is the IQI plate thicness expressed as a percentage of job thickness and the next 2T is the dia of hole that must be visible on the processed radiograph. T here is the thickness of IQI.

Dear Babu,

The meaning of 2/2T is simply, 2 refers the Image Quality indicator thickness is 2% of the specimen thickness, and 2T is our required Sensitivity level (2T hole must be seen). But all the Hole type IQIs thickness are not exactly 2% of the test specimen thickness. So we can simply mention the sensitivity as 2T instead of 2/2T.

It would not be correct to state sensitivity as 2T only as you have stated. 1T, 2T, or 4T are all essential hole to be visible on the radiograph and the preceding digit is indicating what should be the IQI thickness in terms of percentage. For e.g. 1/2T shall not represent 2% sensitivity. Hence, it is needed to state sensitivity required as a combination of IQI Thk in % /Visible hole to be seen in radiograph.

I agree with your term 2-2T. As per SE-1025 "Image quality levels are designated by a two part expression; X-YT. the first part of the expression, X, refers the IQI thickness expressed as a percentage of the specimen thickness. The second part of the expression, YT, refers to the diameter of the required hole and is expressed as a multiple of the IQI thickness, T (for example, the image quality level 2-2T means that the IQI thickness, T, is no more that 2% of the specimen thickness and that the diameter of the required IQI hole is 2 x T)."

There are 6 quality levels 2-1T, 2-2T, 2-4T, 1-1T, 1-2T & 4-2T. (1-2T represents 1% of the specimen thickness).
