Dear Sir,

May I do UT on 4'' ss pipe butt joint.If it is possible then what should be the probe size and angle?

Yes. You may do it, but whenever:
a) the thickness > 6 mmm;
b) the search units are appropiate (dual, low frequencies < 2.5 MHz, longitudinal wave for angle beam...);
c) for longitudinal wave, to use 1/2 skip;
d) the cotact, between the search unit surface and part surface, is correct.

The angle depends on the thickness.
The shize depends on minimun size of flaw to be accepted, and what it is indicated in d)

How you can use dual probe(focussed) for angle beam inspection and longitudinal wave?
First of all check the type of ss.
If the material is austenitic ss use frequency<2.5 MHz(bcz of scattering and attenuation) ,shear wave with proper angles depending on material thickness and probe size can be square or rectangular with 16mm to 25 mm width and 16 mm to 21 mm in height.

There are several SS types (ferritic, austenitic, duplex or martensitic), generally and for austenitic and martensitic SS, an inherent coarse-grained and/or a directionally- oriented structure can cause variations in attenuation, reflection, and refraction at grain boundaries and velocity changes within the grains.

sreejesh pillai- look up HALT or FAST probe for 70deg longitudinal wave ( it's a probe that puts roughly a 32deg shear and a 70deg long into to material (high angle longitudinal technique & flaw analys and sizing technique) some different grades of the same type of SS will not even be conducive to 0deg l-wave ie thickness or lam scans

Hello

Due the thin thickness (4'') i's better to use an angle probe 70`, and a small diameter probe ASAP to have a good contact between the 4" pipe and the probe
The probe frequency is depend the type of stainless steel being inspected taking into account this rule (length wave = velocity / frequency)
