crack in Jumbo beam access hole

I was inspecting a w14x342 column per AISC Specification for Steel Buildings, J1.6 "heavy shapes" with MT.

A 8mm crack turned up traverse to the web in the base metal. I had the welder grind it a little bit and it continues. Now I can have the shop extend the access hole dimension following AWS D1.1, 5.17 dimension limits. However is there a way with AWS D1.1 shear wave probes I can present to the EOR to locate the extent of the crack in the base metal?

Dear friend,

Why can't you use the PT to check the depth of the crack approximately. i.e (width of the bleed out penetrant = depth of the crack).

Regards,

Babu,

Can you explain to me your bases for estimating the crack depth with PT based on the width of the crack being equal to the depth. From everyone I know, PT has been known as a method where depth cannot be evaluated.

Dear Sir,

I have already told it is approximately equal. I knew it we can not judge exact depth of the crack.

K. Babu.

Actually the 8mm was smaller. I was estimating it. It was maybe 75% of the web thickness.
