Inspection without removing coating

Is there any technique which can inspect thickness of carbon steel of 12.7mm thickness and 6" dia with 5mm of Nepprene coating. The client want to inspect without removing the coating.

Yes, you can very likely use an echo-to-echo measurement technique. To get through 5 mm of neoprene, which is quite attenuating, I would suggest working at 2/2.25 MHz. We have an application note that is written around measurement through thin paint rather than thick neoprene, but the description of echo-to-echo testing applies in this case as well. You can do this with any flaw detector, and with quality thickness gages that have a waveform display and adjustable setups.

It depends what you are looking for-if its wall thinning/ internal damage-Intelligent pigging or long range UT will give you some results.BUT if you mean at the welds or outer surface-There wont be enough bond between the coat and the pipe to allow ultrasound through(TOFD PA AUT MANUAL) or ACFM etc?-and radiography will be to time consuming and poor images

Depending of what you are looking for.
If you resaerch inside defect the magnetostriction method can be used:

No I meant the reflation and scattered sound in a coated plate what will be the reaction of the sound under this condition

part of my project is to study that the affect of coating on the carbon steel by conventional ultrasonic testing

Nasser..

l think you can also use the metal detector to judege that is there any metal in the soil. l bought a metal detector in http://www.kingdetector.com/. l also find something interesting. It can detect missing or lost coins, pieces of jewellery and other metal objects.
