ASTM A578 Inspection

Can someone elaborate on 5% of the thickness that is mentioned in ASTM A578 Class A or Class B or Class C acceptance criteria
"Any Area where one or more discontinuity produce a continuous total loss of back wall reflection accompanied by continuous indication on same plane(within 5% of the plate thickness) that can not be encompassed within a circle whose diameter is 3"

Does the above mean if I find a discontinuity in the mid wall I don't need to worry?

Not Indra,
It is referring to the plane of discontinuity, that is, if you have two indication in different thickness and the signal is continuous, this difference must be within 5% wall thickness to consider the discontinuity as same plane.

I will give you a example.
Suppose you have a 100mm wall thickness plate and find two discontinuity in the depth of 40mm and 43mm. 5% thickness is 5mm. So according to ASTM A578 you should consider these discontinuities as one single discontinuity.

m aslo getting same indication on plate of thickness 56mm..and in some area it showng loss of 30% ...
Its middle of plate ..n continuos ..all over plate...i wnat to know that two plates r joined or laninar crack or lamination ????

Prasad,

If the signal is uniform throughout the plate and at the same depth throughout and you know the plate is supposed 56mm then the indication has to be being caused by a lamination, lminar tesring or the fusion of two plates together that failed to fuse at the depth you are detecting.
If you don't mind sharing what is the plate a part of? is it a vessel floor, wall or other application? This might aid us in further helping you in determining the cause. Cheers...

What is the echo amplitude at midwall you found? And which probe are you using?

Please clarify if this plate is part a of A hydraulic pressure vessel to hold 300Tons of pressure.

Some times the pressure vessels are made of multi layers to with stand higher pressures.

Best wishes
