UT Testing of bolts

I have a customer asking if we can do Ultra Sonic testing on bolts, I have no idea on what size these would be, or the methods or limitations. Any ideas? Please, any information would be helpful.

We regularly carry out UT and WFMPT on the high temperature fasteners (bolts) during overhauling schedules.

These bolts are about 1 to 5 inches in diameter and lengths vary up to about 20 inches depending on the size of the turbine and whether are from HP or IP sections or valves.

In UT, we mainly check for transverse cracks. We use 4 MHz probes having 5 or 8 or 10 mm dias.

Scanning is done in the axial direction ( possibly from both ends of the bolt) because the defects ( mainly cracks) come in the transverse direction.

It is very tricky to isolate one or two mm deep defects occurring in the threaded area. (The threads give regular indications when the scanning is being done near the periphery) Requires lot of focus for this task.

Please note that we are checking for manufacturing defects at this stage.

This information may be useful if your bolts are in this dimensional range.

Best wishes

Michael, there is a paper on NDT.net that relates to bolt inspection that you might find useful;
