Question to be certificate on NAS410

Good day to everyone, can somebody answer my question?, I recently joined to this forum and I'm a Level II on PT, I would like to prepare to be a Level III in the same method, but I don't know where can I start my study to get a certificate under the NAS410, the question is: which material of study do i will need? in example, books, study guides, flash cards, etc., Any help is welcome.
Thanks in advance for your help. and greeting from Tijuana, Mexico.

It is all Type I PT. Read ASTM E1208, E1209, E1210 and any specs you have that pertain to your work.

Mario,

Have you read the Standard for NAS-410 Certification? I believe EN-2179 is the European equivalent and the SNT TC-1A is the industrial equivalent. It might help you to identify what you should study.

These are employer owned and operated program for certification the NAS-410 for employment in Aerospace (National Aerospace Standard) which was based of the old Mil-S-410 and the SNT-TC-1A for the industrial sectors. These are still somewhat compliant to the Current ISO 9712 Standard but it allows the employer to detail what is required as a minimum to become certified under their program. Understand however that any NAS-410 Certifications belong to the employer they are not transferable from one company to another (though some companies are beginning to accept training and log books from competitors as long as it shows the work done, training accomplished and hours). Many companies like the NAS-410 and/or SNT-TC-1A as it allows them to train their technicians as they see fit and need at the same time limits losing technicians as rapidly as they might for those that have national certifications.

If you are looking at obtaining certification under any of the current standards, regardless of what they are, you should first read what each standard requires. This might assist you in identifying the types of materials you will or might need to study.

Cheers,

James

Hi Mario,
NAS410 says that there are no training requirements for a NAS410 Level III. The only requirement is Level II for a certain minimum number of years experience depending upon your education.
So basically you need 1, 2 or 4 years experience as Level II. plus the appropriate examinations.

Godfrey,

You are correct that there is no detailed requirement for a written or practical Exam to attain a Level III certification under NAS 410 however it is the up to the employer or the responsible Level III (appointed by the employer) to determine of they want one or not. That is both the blessing and curse of the NAS 410 program. It gives the latitude to individuals to determine what they require rather than having a body of persons stipulate what the minimum requirements shall be.
Even the requirements for Level I and Level II certification can be manipulated to meet employer needs. It is for this reason that if you are going to have an NAS 410 style program you had better have someone with very strong ethics and morals in place as the employer or appointed responsible Level III or your program could end up failing in very short order.

Cheers...

James,
You have that wrong.
There is a requirement for a Level II to have General, Specific and Practical examinations for Level III. It is Training which is not required.
Please see NAS410 Rev 4 (Dec 2014), paragraphs 7.1.2, 7.1.3 and 7.1.4.1.

It is for Level III RECERTIFICATION where the employer can recertify based on "brownie points".

Paragraph 6.1 discusses Training and says that "Candidates from all levels shall complete sufficient formal training to be come proficient.......
It then goes on to show the minimum formal training hours required for Level 1 and Level 2 in Table 1, but nowhere does it define any further requirement for Level 3 training.

I do agree with you on the code of ethics requirement for the employer and Responsible Level 3.
Over in the UK where I am based, we are obliged to use a National Aerospace NDT Board for (Level 1 and Level 2) training and for examinations at all levels.

James, Godfrey, thank you again, your information is very important for me. I have a another question: it's my employer who decides which kind of exam do I need to pass? I understand that it could a delicate process but neither my employer know how to certificate me as level III, it's for that reason that we want know step by step this process. I would like receive more feedback about this theme.

Mario,

I would recommend that either you or your employer obtain a copy of the NAS 410 Rev 4 then read the requirements covered within. It is your employer who should have an understanding of NAS 410 and how the certification program it covers should be implemented and administered. If you are in Europe then the other document you might want to read is EN 4179: 2009 (or latest version) this is, I believe, the European equivalent to NAS 410. Understand however that NAS 410 is a National Aerospace Standard if you are looking to certify to sectors outside of aerospace you may need to look at other certification schemes such as SNT-TC-1A.

A quick Google search will show you where you can obtain copies of any of the above documents.

Remember that regardless the requirements captured in ISO 9712 and other ISO documents for the certification of NDT Personnel and Procedures (ISO 25107, ISO 25108, ISO 11774, ISO 18490, ISO 20807, and ISO 17024 all relate to certification and training) still apply so the minimum requirements covered in those documents also need to be met.

Cheers...

James
